CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Later that afternoon, Bella and Gerrish stood next to each other at the front door like children in front of a lecturing parent. In this case, their father figure was Brion, and by the stiffness of his shoulders and glower on his face, Gerrish didn’t appreciate being told what to do by the Blessing Giver. Bella secretly wished Brion would lick his thumb and wipe the smudge of dirt from Gerrish’s cheek or straighten his collar. That would’ve sent the Herald over the edge. As it stood, Bella thought he might boil over when Brion handed them a pouch of daric coins.

“This should be enough to cover what we need. Do you have any questions?” Brion asked, his violet eyes sparkling in the afternoon sunlight pouring through the front window.

Gerrish frowned. “As soon as our coach arrives, I’ll repay this. As well as any other supplies—”

“No need.” Brion clapped a hand on Gerrish’s shoulder. “This was in my father’s desk. I assume he needed it in this area since there are some who don’t live by the traditions of the realm.”

Bella swallowed. Did he mean some vendors here didn’t supply Blessing Givers without requiring payment? “It’s that bad here?”

Brion nodded and dropped his hand. “From what I can gather, it’s even worse now that the Prophet is gone.”

“Then you’ll need these coins.” Gerrish moved to hand them back, but Brion shook his head and stepped back.

“You’re doing me a favor. I don’t plan to stay here long, but I can’t go back into town. My eyes attract far too much attention. To be honest, I would’ve been relying on canned meat and unleavened bread beginning tomorrow if you two hadn’t come along.”

They hadn’t known Brion for more than a day, and yet he was willing to send them on an errand with the only money he had. Despite the fact that they’d entered his father’s house uninvited. They could be thieves, for all he knew. They could take this pouch and never return, and he’d have no way to seek retribution.

Brion drew a deep breath. “I’ll make something for dinner while you’re out. Then tomorrow, we’ll start a more balanced diet.” He chuckled and waved them off, then turned to walk up the stairs to his room.

Bella watched him before following Gerrish through the door and out into the crisp afternoon air. What was Brion’s story? He’d told them of his place within the enclave and she could make some assumptions about his childhood, but who was he, really? Who let complete strangers into their home and sent them off to town with a pouch full of money? What kind of man made biscuits?

“The path is there.” Bella pointed into the trees ahead of them. The cloak she’d borrowed from the front closet smelled of aged cedar and dust, but she was grateful for the extra layer of warmth. Here she found herself, yet again, with nothing besides the clothes on her back. She’d have to buy more clothes and another trunk to carry them in.
